Established in 1965, The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) has become known as a center of excellence in the world of international education. ISKL is a co-educational, private, not-for-profit school responsible for the learning journey of over 1,700 students aged 3-18 years representing more than 65 nationalities at its campus in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
ISKL offers a robust international curriculum that combines leading North American educational frameworks with global best practices. The curriculum recognizes that students are on a lifelong learning journey and is driven by ISKL’s mission to challenge each student to “Be All You Are” and develop the attitudes, skills, knowledge, and understanding to become a highly successful, spirited, socially responsible global citizen.
ISKL is accredited internationally through the Council of International Schools (CIS), and in the United States through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). There is a strong focus on service and sustainability across its divisions and is a member of the Eco-Schools organization and the Green Schools Alliance.
The ISKL High School program is designed to help students understand and fulfill their academic potential through a challenging curriculum that develops critical thinking, research techniques, problem-solving, and exposure to a variety of perspectives. This is ideal preparation for life beyond ISKL, both at university and in the workplace.
In August 2020, ISKL introduced two new innovative High School curriculum options, PRAXIS 2030 and Pursuits Program, both focus on enhancing student agency and self-directed learning.
PRAXIS 2030 is a transdisciplinary learning program that reimagines the school experience for Grade 9 and Grade 10 students at ISKL. Learning is anchored in complex, real-world challenges, empowering students to thrive in a dynamic present and future. PRAXIS 2030 fosters creative exploration, effective collaboration, and active problem-solving through a differentiated and flexible thinking space. Students reflect deeply and act with agency and empathy to make a positive difference in our world. The PRAXIS 2030 Program will integrate units of study across four disciplines. The subject areas that will be integrated are Social Studies, Science, English, and Art.
In Grade 11 students can choose to undertake the full two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), or combine individual IB, Advanced Placement (AP), and High School Diploma courses via the ISKL Pursuits Program to create a customized program that meets the specific individual needs of each student. ISKL is unique in offering this combination of curriculum options and our students find that being able to tailor their educational program to their interests, aspirations, and university choices enables them to take advantage of global opportunities.
The Pursuits Program gives students the opportunity to create their own program of study related to their chosen Area of Distinction, and take a deep-dive into a chosen area of focus such as Global Issues or Engineering and Design. Students also benefit from an Applied Learning experience which enables them to apply their knowledge and skills in a learning opportunity outside the classroom. Students gain real-world insights and additional knowledge to augment their learning which aids post-secondary decision-making and supports transition from school to university or workplace. Experiences include off-campus internship, dedicated weekly service, or a work placement assignment with one of our departments on campus.
All students who meet ISKL’s graduation requirements receive an ISKL High School Diploma which is equivalent to a U.S. High School Diploma, this includes students who complete the IB Diploma Programme and Pursuits Program.
