The A-levels or Advanced Levels are a British sixth form qualification, which begins after the IGCSE / GCSE exams and takes either 18 or 24 months to complete. These qualifications are widely recognised globally and paves the way for students to pursue their tertiary education at prestigious universities.

Westlake International School offers two pathways towards attaining the A-level qualification taking either 18 or 24 months.

18 months
Students can begin their 18-month A-level programme in January immediately after the SPM examinations, and admission is based on forecast results. This allows for a head start in the next phase of studies; but due to the accelerated nature of the programme, only three subjects may be taken.

This accelerated pathway saves on tuition and boarding fees; and allows for earlier entry to university due finishing six months earlier. Although learning is rigorous due to the compacted timeline, the accelerated option strongly encourages students to become independent learners.

This character trait is critical for tertiary studies as universities want their learners to take the initiative in gaining knowledge and skills. Mastering three A-levels subjects within a tighter time frame is a challenge and shows great drive and discipline.

During the 18 months at Westlake International School, students also have the chance to take part in numerous international programs and competitions including the Kijang Economics Competition, ICAS Science Competition, Kangaroo Math Malaysia, IMO National Selection Test, Kancil Science Competition, Beaver Computational Thinking Competition, Asian Science and Maths Olympiad and many others.

Students on this accelerated path area also exposed to industry requirements and have the chance to participate in job shadowing assignments and getting real-world work experience.

24 months
Commencing in August, this programme follows the same timeline as international university admission schedules. This two-year course is for those who want to fully immerse themselves in the three or four subjects they choose.

The additional time means examinations are also staggered so students have sufficient time to prepare and gain all the knowledge and skills needed to not only pass exams, but to focus on other pursuits. Using the extra time wisely allows students to improve leadership skills and be better prepared for the rigours of university.

During this 24-month journey, there are opportunities to participate in international programs and competitions including the Kijang Economics Competition, ICAS Science Competition, Kangaroo Math Malaysia, IMO National Selection Test, Kancil Science Competition, Beaver Computational Thinking Competition, Asian Science and Maths Olympiad and many others.

Just like the 18-month accelerated path, students on the 24-month journey will also have the opportunity for job shadowing and industrial placements. With longer job placements, students can enhance their portfolio, develop a better understanding of business, impress potential employers and broaden their professional network.
