Introduction

Established in 1965, The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) has become known as a center of excellence in the world of international education. ISKL is a co-educational, private, not-for-profit school responsible for the learning journey of over 1,700 students aged 3-18 years representing more than 65 nationalities at its campus in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

ISKL offers a robust international curriculum that combines leading North American educational frameworks with global best practices. The curriculum recognizes that students are on a lifelong learning journey and is driven by ISKL’s mission to challenge each student to “Be All You Are” and develop the attitudes, skills, knowledge, and understanding to become a highly successful, spirited, socially responsible global citizen.

ISKL is accredited internationally through the Council of International Schools (CIS), and in the United States through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). There is a strong focus on service and sustainability across its divisions and is a member of the Eco-Schools organization and the Green Schools Alliance.

For our youngest learners, learning is about inspiring curiosity and learning through play. ISKL’s Early Childhood Program (Prep Reception, Prep Junior, and Prep Senior) is based on the development of the whole child with social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and creative skills cultivated through learning experiences and activities within structured and creative learning environments.

The Elementary School program builds on the skills and learning outcomes of the Early Childhood Program through a standards-based curriculum that specifies what students should know and be able to do. Articulated levels of performance are determined for each grade level and guide instruction and learning outcomes. The curriculum builds in complexity as students move through each grade and develop a strong foundation in language arts, mathematics, social studies, world languages, and science. Specialists provide instruction in visual arts, music, and physical education. Information literacy, health, service learning, and environmental education are also integrated throughout the curriculum.

To enhance learning, classrooms are equipped with a wide range of technology tools. There are also indoor and outdoor learning spaces including multi-sensory Makerspaces, a child-friendly kitchen, woodworking, gardens, and an art studio. With a dedicated team of education specialists, ISKL also provides extra support for language, literacy, social, and emotional development.
