The International School Awards were held in London and attended by over 200 senior representatives from international schools around the world. The Awards are given over several categories in recognition of the excellent initiatives international schools constantly strive to achieve for the betterment of their students.

Alice Smith School was shortlisted in two categories – learning and teaching pastoral initiatives – and won the Pastoral Initiative category for its work with student-led positive playtimes. This initiative focused on developing Year 6 leadership opportunities and empowering students to transform playtimes. Student leadership training was developed with positions like Referees, Equipment Managers, Play Mentors, Monitors, Buddies and Helpers, allowing students to become an integral part of the initiative. New resources were introduced to use within playground zones and students were involved in every stage of the process. The aim was to ensure students feel happy and safe during playtime with the help of student-led assemblies and reviews of the implementation.

Tom Verity, Primary Principal said, “Listening to our students about their opinions and views and encouraging and supporting student leadership, are of paramount importance at the school. Having children closely involved in developing and looking after their playtime equipment and environment has further developed their sense of belonging, participation and respect for each other and adults.”

One of the pillars of the Alice Smith School culture focuses on sharing knowledge and learning together as a community. The International School Awards raises awareness of the important initiatives implemented in international schools and the recognition gained for the school is proof of its high-quality student care.

Other awards
The Alice Smith School also recently achieved the Professional Development Quality Mark (PDQM) Gold Award, by the UCL Institute of Education. The PDQM was developed by experienced PD Leaders in partnership with specialists at the London Centre for Leadership in Learning to improve professional development practice in schools and educational settings across London, and beyond. Alice Smith School is the first international school to gain this quality mark and is now working towards Platinum level recognition.

Other notable achievements include being shortlisted for the TES International School of the Year Award in 2016, the British International School Awards (BISA) and Relocate Awards, both in 2018.
